Welcome to the California Asthma Among the School-Aged (CAASA) project website.

The CAASA project is a research study involving seven community clinics in California that improved guideline-based asthma care for children 5-18 years old through the use of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), Community Health Workers (CHWs) and Community linkages.

Notable outcomes of the CAASA project:

  • Significant reduction in the frequency of daytime and nighttime asthma symptoms
  • Significant reduction in the number of asthma-related missed school days and asthma-related missed work days by parent/caregiver
  • Significant reduction in the number of emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and office visits due to exacerbation of asthma symptoms
  • Significant increase in the number of children with documentation of asthma severity, development of an asthma action plan, and receipt of flu vaccine in the past 12 months
  • Significant improvement in patient (or parent/caregiver) self-reported level of confidence in their ability to manage their asthma
  • Significant increase in the number of patients (or parents/caregivers) who rate overall asthma care as excellent or very good
Within these pages you will learn more about the CAASA project and team, the CAASA model, the CAASA clinics, and the tools used to improve guideline-based asthma care for children 5-18 years old in California.
